NCU is the “211 Project” National Key University co-constructed by the People’s Government of Jiangxi Province and the Ministry of Education (MOE), China. NCU is supported by the national programs for building basic capabilities and for enhancing the comprehensive capabilities of higher learning institutions in the mid-west region, also an experimental university for comprehensive reform on higher learning institutions of Jiangxi Province.

NCU is located in Nanchang, a heroic city famous for its rich cultural heritage, beautiful scenery, and outstanding wits. With its main campus near the verdant Xishan Mountain and scenic Nanpu Garden, it is an ideal place for study and research. The university has five campuses: the Qianhu main campus, and the Qingshanhu, Donghu, Poyanghu and Fuzhou campuses. The Qianhu main campus occupies an area of 300 hectares, with a total building area of more than 1,300,000 square meters.

The origin of NCU can be traced back to Jiangxi Public Medical School and National Chung Cheng University, which were founded in 1921 and in 1940, respectively. In 1993, the former Jiangxi University and the former Jiangxi Polytechnic University (both founded in 1958) merged into Nanchang University, ushering in the institutional reform of higher education across China. In 2005, NCU merged with the former Jiangxi Medical College (founded in 1921), opening a new page for the reform and development of the university. Over the years, the central and local governments have attached importance to the construction and development of the university. President Xi Jinping, during his inspection to NCU, expressed his belief that‘Nanchang University has a promising future’.

Totally, NCU has 4,625 faculty members, among whom 2,768 are full-time teachers, 1,464 professors/associate professors as well as 110 foreign teachers. NCU currently has 4 dually-employed academicians, 2 chief scientists of the National “973 Program”, 4 members of the National “Thousand Talents Program”, 4 recipients of the National Natural Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars, 5 members of the Cheung Kong Scholars Program, 1 supervisor for National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation, 1 National Prominent Teacher, 11 members of the “National Hundred, Thousand, and Ten-Thousand Talents Project”, 2 recipients of the National Natural Science Foundation for Excellent Young Scholars, 1 member of the Discipline Evaluation Group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, 2 members of the Academic Division, Science & Technology Committee, MOE, and 12 members of the New (Transit) Century Excellent Talents Program, MOE. The university has also cultivated many excellent teachers, like Shi Qujie who was the national model teacher and Zou Defeng who is the Laureate of the Florence Nightingale Award (international top honorary award for nursing).

Currently, NCU has 36,936 full-time undergraduates, 13,621graduates, and 782 international students on the main campus. NCU has been ardently exploring a new mode to cultivate top innovative talents, founding the Jiluan Academy and implementing reforms in fostering talents at the interface of disciplines and schools. In 2014, NCU received 2 second prizes of state-level teaching awards. Since its founding, NCU has cultivated more than 400,000 qualified talents, a great contribution to the economic and social development locally and nationally.

NCU has 3 faculties, namely Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty of Sciences and Engineers, and Faculty of Medical Sciences, running 116 undergraduate programs covering 12 discipline fields. It has 2 national key disciplines (Food Science, Material Physics and Chemistry), 1 national key discipline under cultivation (Material Processing Engineering), 8 academic disciplines with Ph.D. programs, 45 academic disciplines with master’s degrees, 1discipline authorized for doctoral degree (Clinical Medicine), 18 discipline authorized for master’s degrees, and 11 post-doctoral research stations. In addition, it boasts 5 affiliated hospitals with 9 national key clinic specialties. Its Chemistry, Clinical Medicine, and Agriculture Science (including Food Science), and Engineering have been globally listed among top 1 percent by ESI. In the third overall evaluation of disciplines, Food Science and Engineering ranks the fourth place nationally. Moreover, 1 doctoral dissertation on Food Science and Engineering has been selected as National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation, a significant breakthrough in Jiangxi Province.

With a solid foundation for school running, NCU is evaluated as an outstanding university in the undergraduate teaching evaluation program carried out by the Ministry of Education. It boasts 1 national teaching team (Public Mathematics), 1 national demonstration course for bilingual teaching (Gene Engineering), 1 national teaching center with virtual simulation (Engineering Mechanics), 2 national top-quality courses (Modern Chinese and Advanced Mathematics), 6 national top-quality publicly-shared open courses, 2 national teaching bases for out-of-campus practice, 3 national pilot key programs for comprehensive reform on disciplines, 4 national model centers for laboratory experiments, 4 national centers for engineering practical education, 7 national planning textbooks during the 12th five-year period, 9 national characteristic specialties, and 15 majors of national outstanding talents cultivation plan. Furthermore, NCU is the central node in Jiangxi Province of the China Education and Research Network (CERNET) and the only university in Jiangxi Province upgraded to IPV6 and linked to CNGI. It runs an academic journal, Journal of Nanchang University, which has four sub-editions (liberal arts, sciences, medicine, and engineering), with the first two editions listed as GCJC journals and the latter two as CSTPCD journals.

Presently, NCU runs 1 state key laboratory (Food Science and Technology), 1 national engineering and technology research center (Silicon-based LED), 1 key research base for humanities and social sciences, MOE (Research Center for Economic & Social Development of Central China), 2 key laboratories, MOE (i.e, the Food Science, and the Poyang Lake Environment and Resource Utilization), 3 engineering research centers, MOE (i.e., Luminescent Materials & Devices, Biomass Conversion, and Interventional Diagnostic and Treatment Apparatus of Cardiovascular Diseases), and 9 collaborative innovative center of Jiangxi Province.

In 2015, NCU has a total of 199 natural research projects granted by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and 21 social science projects approved by the National Social Science Foundation of China (SSFC), ranking 30th and 36th among Chinese universities, respectively, with 1 as key project by the SSFC and 1 as key project by China National Arts Fund (in the category of full-length stage plays).

With growing enhancement in collaborative innovative competence, NCU has made great research achievements in Technology of Gan-based blue LED on Silicon Substrate, FKBP 12.6-Mediated Calcium Release in SR Myocardial Cell, Ganoderma Quality Control, Structural Characteristics & Active Functions of Polysaccharides from Ganoderma Atrum, Norepinephrine Regulation of Cognitive Memory, Anaphylactic Diseases of House Dust Mite Allergen and Development of Its Diagnostic Kit, Industrialization of the Key Technology of Deep processing of Rice Nutrient Instant Food, Industrialization of the Key Technology of Probiotic-fermented Fruit and Vegetables, Digitalized Detection System of the High-speed Wheel Track, and Efficient Utilization and Green Separation of Ionic Rare Earth Minerals. NCU launches all-round and multi-level collaborations with governmental organizations, enterprises or institutions, giving an impetus to the industrialization of its research findings and promoting a close integration between governmental organizations, research, education, production and application. The successful industrialization of silicon substrate LED technology, for instance, has contributed to the establishment of Jiangxi Optical Valley and paved the way for the development of China’s LED industry with proprietary intellectual property rights.

NCU attaches great importance to international exchange and cooperation. It has established lasting relationships with nearly 90 universities or research institutions in more than 30 countries or regions. The university has co-founded two Confucius Institutes abroad, namely, the Confucius Institute at the University of Poitiers, France, and the Confucius Institute at Hasanuddin University, Indonesia. In addition, it has founded a joint laboratory of food science and technology in collaboration with Agriculture and Agri-Food, Canada.

In the new historical period of reform and development, the University embraces the educational philosophy of ‘building the university via academics, developing the university through talents, and managing the university by law’. It adheres to the development thought of ‘enhancing disciplines, refining management, improving faculty welfare, and doing solid work’. With its mind open, NCU will aggregate consensus and implement further reform so as to endeavor towards the goal of building the University into a high-level and comprehensive university with distinctive characteristics.
